I'm not exactly sure why or how (I guess I need to do more research) but, for some reason hardwood lumber is sold in lumber yards in quarter inches of thickness.

If you want a board that is one inch thick, you are looking for 4/4 (four quarter) planks.

You want a board 2 inches thick? You're looking for 8/4 lumber.

So, 12/4 is how thick?
yes, 3 inches thick. You get the idea.

And yes the first lot that I bought was 300 board feet of 6/4 cherry lumber (inch and a half thick). It created some interesting design challenges and solutions.

...board feet?
